Educational Series – Treating small airways dysfunction in asthmatic children
This Educational Review discusses the treatment of small airways dysfunction (SAD) in children with asthma. It is now recognised that the small airways play an important role in the development of asthma and that SAD is associated with worse asthma control and an increased risk of exacerbations. The use of extra fine inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) allows greater deposition of medication in the small airways, resulting in improved asthma control with reduced doses, compared to traditional ICS formulations.
